WALLA WALLA–The Lady Buccaneers fended off a fourth-quarter surge by the Lady Irish to take a 41-39 non-conference win here last Saturday, and clobbered Tekoa-Rosalia 69-28 at home Friday to own a 2-2 league record, 4-4 overall.
Pomeroy hosted Touchet last Tuesday, and travels to Palouse for a Friday the Thirteenth contest against the Lady Vikings. Liberty Christian will visit on Saturday on the home hardwood.
"This was a great win for us," said Head Coach Tai Bye of the win over DeSales, "but we really had to work for it."
The Lady Pirates and DeSales were even in the first quarter, then Pomeroy grew the lead to 22-11 at half only to have the Lady Irish outscore them 28-19 in the second half.
"We pulled ahead in the first half and started to get some good momentum," Bye said, "but DeSales closed the gap in the fourth quarter and forced us to be disciplined and patient.
"We had too many turnovers that led to points, and we had some fouls that led to a pair of three-point plays, but we never stopped working, even when it got tense at the end.
"We kept our composure, made some clutch shots, and grabbed a few rebounds to give us a second chance," Bye said.
Jillian Herres played in foul trouble but led the team with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, Bye said. "Jillian kept her team under control in the final minutes and played smart offensively, rebounded hard, and stayed away from her fifth foul," Bye said.
The Lady Pirates ran away with the game against Tekoa-Rosalia, blowing the Lady Timberwolves out in the first half to put the 69-28 win away.
Herres paced scorers with 30 points, rebounding nine, and stealing four with four blocks.
Kiersten Bartels was hot from the arc, burying three treys on her way to totaling 11 points, while standing out on defense, Bye said.
"We had another really great team game," Bye commented. "I have been so impressed with how we are coming together and using each other's strengths. We have been increasing our assists and our rebounds, which is something we have been struggling with earlier this season. I am encouraged with the confidence and effort that we are showing on the floor because it continues to grow each game."
