Slusser trey lifts Pirates over Oakesdale 'Hawks

POMEROY–Jett Slusser drained a three pointer in the final seconds of the game to give the Pirates a 47-44 decision at Oakesdale and a big league win, preserving Pomeroy's good 6-1 league record as the regular season winds down to the final few games. The Pirates are now 9-5 on the season and 6-1 in league play with road trips to Colton and Tekoa-Rosalia ahead this weekend.

With 30 seconds to go and the Pirates trailing by three points, Trevin Kimble, who scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, swished a trey to knot the score 44 all.

Pomeroy's press forced a turnover with 20 seconds on the clock and Kimble, driving to the hoop, dished to Slusser at the arc for the decisive three-point basket.

"Trevin made a great decision on a drive to the basket to kick out to Jett Slusser," said Head Coach Chris Wolf, "and Jett knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer with two seconds to play for the win.

"This was a defensive struggle from start to finish," Wolf said. "We were able to come up with big stops down the stretch and hit big shots in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.

"We were able to hold them to three of 21 (14%) from the three-point line and dominated on the boards tonight led by Ollie Severs 13 rebounds," he said.

Wolf praised Boone Schmidt for subbing for Kimble in the second quarter. Schmidt shut down Jackson Perry while Kimble was on the bench with two fouls, which let us go into the half only down one, Wolf said.

The Pirates completed their sweep of SJEL with Kimble and Severs leading the team to a 63-57 win.

"We played well from the start of the game and, slowly but surely, pulled away," Wolf said.

"We did a great job on the boards tonight led by Ollie Severs with 19," the coach said. "It seemed at times Ollie was getting every rebound on both ends of the floor."

Kimble led with 20 points and four steals, with Severs pumping in 16.

"Trace Roberts had a great second half," Wolf said, "finishing through contact to score 12 points with six rebounds. Jett Slusser had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Brodie Magill had a great game tonight with seven points and four assists along with shutting down SJEL's second scorer."

A 54-42 loss at Dayton-Waitsburg Jan. 17 was a physical battle Wolf hoped would tune up the team prior to the coming weekend.

"Both teams battled hard and it turned into a half-court slugfest," Wolf said. DW scored several transition buckets in the first quarter, but the Pirates answered with a 12-2 second quarter for a 22-all half time score. In the third, DW again capitalized on its transition game, but again the Pirates tied it up. "We couldn't maintain our momentum," Wolf said. "We missed some shots we normally make and they hit some well-contested shots. We rebounded hard tonight and defended hard, but struggled to put the ball in the hole."
