POMEROY–The Pomeroy Wrestling Team all finished in the money here Saturday, making the cut to the Regional Tournament this Saturday in Reardan in the Southeast 1B/2B League Championship.
"All three wrestlers will be going to regionals to battle it out for one of the three spots to state," said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. The top four out of this tournament advanced.
The Pirates were seventh with 44 points, with Davenport leading with 227 points.
"Freshman Peyton Cannon had a great day finishing second in his weight class (160-lb.)," said Slaybaugh. Cannon downed Stewart Ashmoore of Liberty with a pin at :46. He then dropped Jaxson Hamilton of Northwest Christian with a fall at 2:51. In the championship bout, Matthew Wines of Davenport pinned him at 1:38.
Junior wrestler Curtis Winona drew a bye in the first round, as did his second-round opponent Brock Gustaveson of Davenport, and the two grappled in the second round, with Gustaveson winning by fall at 4:10. In the consolation bracket, Winona met Sterling McLaughlin of Reardan, pinning him at :43 for third place, and a berth in Regionals.
Pirate senior Nick Hastings competed in the 195-lb. division, taking on Josiah Mendoza of Reardan in the opening round, and pinning him at :37. Against Sam Schneider in the second bout, Hastings lost by fall at 2:59, dropping into the consolation bracket. There he met Carson Durbin of Reardan, losing by fall at 3:59 for fourth place and the chance to compete the following Saturday.
