The Jr. Hi. Wrestling team traveled to Lincoln MS in Pullman February 27 to match up with Jenifer, Potlatch, Dayton/Waitsburg, and Pullman MS. Pomeroy competed against every school within a 100-mile radius that has junior high winter wrestling.
"We had several great matches," said Coach Fred Knebel.
Kole Zimmerman led the team with a third-place medal. Zimmerman made it to the finals where he lost to the champion from Sacajawea, Knebel said. "In this tournament, they have wrestle-backs, which means the third-place wrestler can challenge the second-place wrestler if they have not wrestled that day. Kole made an amazing transformation from the seventh grade to the eighth grade. He was my second coach up on the deck all season and I really appreciated his maturity."
Placing fourth for the Pirates were both Jackson Hutchens and Jess Winona. Placing fifth were Anthane Boyd and James Blachly. Placing sixth was Lincoln Lovgren.
"This is a very tough tournament for sixth graders," Knebel said.
Chance Savage was unable to wrestle due to a leg injury.
Lincoln Lovgren wrestled hard but came up short with both of his older opponents.
James Blachly wrestled hard and is getting closer every match to having his arm raised.
Jackson Hutchens lost his first match by points before pinning his second opponent in the second round.
Jess Winona also split matches on the night as he pinned his first opponent in the first round.
Kole Zimmerman won his first match of the night by a first round pin, then lost a tough match 6-11.
