Bales and Boyer shine in first meet

CLARKSTON–Katie Boyer and Sidney Bales were Pirate standouts at the first track and field meet of the season here March 21.

Boyer pole vaulted 8-0 for first and sprinted to fifth in the 100m. dash in 14.95. Bales counted three first-place finishes: the 100m. in 11.53, the pole vault at 13-6 and long jump at 19-6, and tied for second in the high jump at 5-6.

"This meet vaulted him into the top times andmarks in the state in the 100, pole vault, and long jump and tied for second in the state in the high jump," said Coach Adam VanVogt. "All four times or marks for Sidney were personal bests making it a phenomenal start to the season for him."

"There were 34 boys in the 100 where Sidney (first place) and Tyler Slaybaugh (eighth place) competed," VanVogt said.

"Katie's [Boyer] fifth-place 100-meter dash finish was pretty impressive as there were 33 girls running the race," he said.

"The team had a great day," the coach said. "Our experienced returning athletes got to go against a lot of good competition to open the year. We also have a lot of kids competing for the first time and it was awesome for them to get into their first meet."        

Other athletes placed in multiple events and had a great meet, VanVogt said. Tyler Slaybaugh was in the 100 and pole vault, and Bethany Zimmerman was in the long jump, high jump, and 400m.

  Other personal bests set at the meet included Tyler Bagby in the 100 (12.99), Levi Bowen in pole vault (9'6"), Cash Copher in the long jump (14'10"), Rylan Hayes-Carnahan in shot put (31'8") and discus (83'6"), Tyler Slaybaugh in pole vault (11'), David Tejero in shot put (30'6.5"), Jaycee Ames in the 1600 (9:35), Natalia Larios in the 100 (16.60), and Bethany Zimmerman in three events (400-1:13, high jump- 3'10", long jump- 13'3.5").
