POMEROY–The 2023 League Season concluded for the Pomeroy Gun Club (PGC) on Sunday March 26 with an annual day of shooting games, potluck and barbecue, and the annual business meeting with election of officers. There were around 70 adults, youth shooters and family members who attended the festivities.
The kids spent time on one trap field playing shooting games like Annie Oakley's and buddy shoots. The adults shot 50 rounds of 16-yard targets on the other field with class awards given to the top shooters.
Matt Fitzgerald won the "D" class competition with a score of 47X50, and Steve Brown posted a 46. In "C" Class Beau Blachly won a shoot off over Nick Hastings after the two put up scores of 47 before overtime. In "B" Class Jeff Hannas had the top score of the day missing only one target for a score of 49. Mason Blachly shot a 47 for second place. Larry Bunch had the top score in "A" Class with a score of 48. Jim Adams and Tracy Hanger had scores of 47.
Annual awards were given for the top shooters in all categories and the top 16-yard shooter in the youth 12-year-old and younger group was Luke Collier. Byron Collier was the top Sub-Junior in 16-Yard competition and Mason Garcia headed up the Junior Division.
In 12-year-old and under Handicap competition Rowdy Cole was the top shooter. Braxton McKeirnan got the trophy for Sub Junior Handicap and Brodie Magill captured the Junior Hardware.
Carter Barron was the High Overall Champion in the 12-year-old and under group. Gunner Magill won the Sub-Junior High Overall and Ollie Severs was the Junior Champion. High Overall all is the top shooter in both 16-yard and Handicap combined.
Holly Ledgerwood was the top "A" Class shooter for the 10-week Adults 16-yard competition and that success also helped her with making the Camas Prairie Ladies All Star team with four other women from other clubs. The "B" Class Champion for the year was Lee Koller. Travis Ledgerwood captured "C" Class honors and Steve Brown was the "D" Class winner. Lee Blachly received the 16-yard award for Veterans.
Wayne Tetrick captured the Club Handicap award for the 10 weeks. Pearl Blachly was the Lady Handicap winner and Jim Adams took Veteran Honors.
Larry Bunch took the trophy for Continentals for the year and Tracy Hanger topped the Doubles competition.
Brian Bingman was the High All-Around Champion which is 16-yard and Handicap combined. Buck Geiger was the High Overall winner for the second year in a row with the top average in 16-yard, Handicap, Continentals and Doubles combined.
Dayton shooter Don Perrigin was recognized for his unending support of youth shooters from Columbia County. Don has brought kids up from Dayton for several years to compete in the PGC Youth program. He makes the trip both on Saturday and Sunday for the entire 10 weeks and competes himself with the adults on Sunday. Don also gets donations from the group Pheasants Forever for the Pomeroy Gun Club Youth program.
The Club is gratefull for Don's efforts and the support from the Shepherd Foundation in Garfield County. The Youth shooters did a great job of selling raffle tickets for a market hog that will be raffled off at the Garfield County Fair this coming fall. Kenny Bott recognized all these efforts during the annual business meeting.
Officers were elected and remained mostly the same with Travis Ledgerwood President, Terry John Vice President, Tracy Hanger Secretary, Larry Bunch Treasurer, Luke Ledgerwood, Steve Ledgerwood, Wayne Tetrick and Ben Feider Directors and Justin Dixon past President Director.
Robert Koller asked to be taken off as Alternate representative to the Camas Prairie Association so Jim Adam and Terry John will represent the Club in that capacity as representative and alternate.
The Gun Club will host shooting at the local range on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. through the spring and summer months for practice. Registered shoots at other Clubs may affect that schedule if shooters travel to those competitions.
