Bales and Boyer flying high

COLFAX–Pirates Sidney Bales and Katie Boyer are pole vaulting well, both athletes taking first in the event at meets last week, the MacDougall Invitational here April 22 and at a NE 2B meet in Clarkston on April 18.

At MacDougall, Bales cleared 13-0 and Boyer 8-6 for firsts in the pole vault, helping the boys to eighth place with 33½ and the girls to 12th place with 17 points. At Clarkston, Bales matched his 13-0 vault and Boyer set a personal record of 8-10. Bales also ran an 11-86 100m for first place, adding to the boys' team's 22 and Boyer's mark helping the girls win third with 78½ points.

"This was Sidney's second year in a row finishing with a first place at this invite (4x1 last year) and he placed in all four of his events, and Katie set a personal-best in pole vault Tuesday at 8'10" before following it up with her first-place finish," said Head Coach Adam VanVogt. "Both of them had a great week!

"We competed well and had a lot of athletes place high at these meets," said VanVogt. "We had nine individuals or relays place at the MacDougal."

"A lot of our athletes did really well this week," VanVogt said, "many of them building on personal bests and quite a few ranked in state. Our athletes have big goals and two-meet weeks the next two weeks so I anticipate them continuing to build on their times and marks as the weather warms up and we keep rounding into post-season form."

Tyler Slaybaugh also had a great MacDougall meet as he set personal bests in the 100 (11.65) and 200 (24.63); both times that have him ranked in state.

Other athletes to set personal bests this week include: Ismael Arteaga in discus (53'5"), Tyler Bagby in long jump (17'3"), Levi Bowen in the 400 (58.77) and long jump (16'6"), Braedon Fruh in pole vault (12'6") and the 400 (57.38), Rylan Hays-Carnahan in shot put (33'7") and javelin (81'7"), Samuel Lamb in javelin (93'11") and the 400 (1:08), Santiago Lyden in the 200 (31.02), David Tejero in shot put (34'3") and javelin (105'7"), Robby Van Vogt in triple jump (31'10"), Trevin Walton in long jump (17'.5") and triple jump (36'), Carmen Fruh in pole vault (8'), Haven Kimble in the 100 (15.89) and 200 (32.99), Sage Kimble in shot put (20'9"), Natalia Larios in long jump (11'1.5"), Savannah Lyden in shot put (17'6"), Carolina Morfin in shot put (18'9") and discus (51'4"), Sophia Phelps in the 200 (38.01), Emma Thompson in shot put (13'4") and javelin (27'9"), Rilee Thompson in shot put (20'3") and discus (56'3"), and Bethany Zimmerman in the 400 (1:12).
