Lady Pirates break winless streak with 15-11 win over G-P

GARFIELD–A seventh-inning rally propelled the Lady Pirates over the Garfield-Palouse Lady Vikings 15-11 to break a long losing spell for the fast-pitch team here on April 25, then the team finished out the season with twin-bill losses to Tekoa-Rosalia and DeSales, ending the campaign with a 1-19 season record, 1-9 in conference play. Pomeroy finished in a tie with Gar-Pal for fifth place.

"The girls came back excited to play [after losing 23-13 in the first game]," commented Head Coach Lexi Beale, "and took the win. They have worked so hard this season and earned this win! "

KayLee Schmidt hammered a home run to left field, Izzy Field batted in four runs and hit a triple and Hannah Bagby hit a double, Beale said.

"They worked hard in the field," she added.

The first game was a runaway for the Lady Vikings but Jadence Gingerich hit an infield home run and Bagby counted six RBIs.

In the winning game, the Lady Bucs held a 4-2 lead going into fourth inning, adding another two runs while blanking the Lady Vikings.

Then Gar-Pal rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, but Pomeroy wasn't to be denied and scored four in the top of the sixth to a 10-7 advantage. The Vikes managed three runs to knot the score at 10-10.

The Pirates rung up five more runs in the top frame of the seventh then shut down Gar-Pal, holding them to one run and finishing ahead 15-11.

The first game included home runs by Gingerich and Bagby as they started taking a 7-2 lead. But G-P caught up and overtook the Pirates in the third inning with seven runs and a 13-7 lead, then scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth for a ten-run mercy-rule win.

Against DeSales on April 27, the Pirates could manage just a handful of runs in each games, dropping by 18-5 and 18-2.

"The girls had a tough first game," Beale said. "They worked hard in the field. In game one, Maria Altube had a double."

Caroline McKeirnan doubled in the fifth inning, with the Pirates hitting well that frame.

"The Lady Pirates did great in the field," the coach commented. "We celebrated Senior Night with our three seniors KayLee Schmidt, Jadence Gingerich, and Clara Jentz.

Tekoa-Rosalia rode an eight-run fourth inning to a 16-6 first-game win, then rolled up 31 runs in the mercy-rule nightcap, 31-3, last Saturday at Rosalia.

"The girls worked hard this season," Beale said. "They have improved since the beginning of the season and have amazing attitudes when it comes to the game. I'm proud of all of them and am excited to see what the next season brings."
