A deep hunger

A cafeteria worker shared a secret for instilling in her customers a deeper appreciation for her food. She whispered to me, "I make them smell it for a while before I serve it. It makes them hungrier and more appreciative." I don't know how many tricks she had, but she definitely understood how important it was for hunger to be stimulated.

The Lord appreciates a deep hunger for Him. His Word says, "Blessed (meaning "happy") are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled," (Mt. 5:8). He satisfies our hunger. Hunger for the Lord brings fulfillment that results in our being "happy."

The Lord should never be treated with lukewarm indifference, especially by His children. Proverbs 27:7 says, "To the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet." We become hungrier for the Lord when we exercise the faith we already have. What He gives tastes all the richer because we are faithfully putting into practice the love we have for Him.

Using all our faculties to love and please the Lord throughout our daily life creates an even deeper hunger for Him.

We can also pray and ask that He would deepen our hunger for Him. The Lord doesn't let those who hunger for Him go away hungry. He promises they will be blessed with happiness and filling.
