We may find ourselves being tempted to be unfaithful to the Lord when we least expect it. Our relationship with the Lord may be stronger than ever and still we find ourselves severely tempted. The Bible says “all temptation is common to man.” Even Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are - yet He did not sin” Heb. 4:15.
The “tempter,” the Devil, has lots of practice at his craft and he works very hard. His methods may vary from one time to the next. Motivated by a hunger to destroy, he may surprise us with a new tactic we hadn’t seen before and show up in an unexpected time and place.
Whatever the temptation may be, the Lord promises us strength to resist and turn to Him. He is with us at that very moment and the strength He offers us is much greater than the temptation we face. We are told “the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” 1 Jn. 4:15.
Jesus promised us strength as a gift of grace: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” 2 Cor. 12:9. He supplies strength to our weakness. Every temptation is an opportunity to love the Lord and glorify Him as we resist the temptation and turn to Him.
What joy He gives our hearts when we choose Him over sin. What assurance He shares with us as His pleasure fills our hearts. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you” James 4:7-8.
O glorious victory that overcomes the world!
