POMEROY–Ollie Severs's back-of-the-end zone catch for the two-point conversion in double overtime lifted the Pirates over the Charlo Vikings 42-40 in a game Head Coach Kyle Kimble dubbed "for the ages."
"Both teams gave tremendous effort and battled the entire game," Kimble commented. "The Pirates had to turn to the air because Charlo stuffed our run game and Jett Slusser came through with five touchdown passes and 397 yards.
"Boone Schmidt caught three touchdown passes and had 123 yards receiving," Kimble added.
The Pirates opened the game with a 60-yard touchdown from Slusser to Schmidt. Charlo stopped Slusser short on the PAT run. The remainder of the first saw both teams battling to a draw.
In the second quarter, Viking Tayre Brown punched in from the one to knot the score 6-6.
The Bucs answered with a 34-yard Slusser-to-Schmidt pass and an 12-6 lead, the half ending with no further scoring.
In the third, Charlo ball carrier Brown hustled in from the five to tie the game 12-12, and his PAT run was squelched.
The final quarter started with Pomeroy on the Charlo 27-yard line and Slusser missing throws to Jacob Reisinger and Trace Roberts. A penalty made it fourth and 25 and Slusser hit Walker Flynn but Charlo's Titan Inman tackled Flynn for no gain and the ball turned over on downs.
The Vikings started a march covering 58 yards in ten plays, finishing with Hollow scoring on a five-yard run for a Charlo 18-12 lead. David Tejero tackled Hollow on the PAT attempt.
Pomeroy set up shop at midfield and wasted little time scoring on a 46-yard Slusser pass to Severs. The extra-point throw to Schmidt was also good for a 20-18 Pirate lead.
The Vikings again put together a touchdown series ending with a one-yard run by Hollow. Hollow hit Sharbono for the two-point conversion and a 26-20 Viking lead.
With time short, Slusser again wasted no time, throwing a 47-yard touchdown strike to Roberts. The point-after pass, intended for Severs, missed, but the scored was tied 26 all.
The Pirates executed an on-side kick and recovered the ball at mid field. On the last play of regulation, Slusser's pass to Schmidt fell uncaught.
In the first overtime, Slusser was sacked by Wesley Anderson. He then broke free for a 34-yard touchdown scamper and on the extra point, Severs crossed the goal line for a 34-26 Pirate lead.
The Vikings started with Hollow gaining 12 to the Pirate 13-yard line. Flynn threw Hollow for a loss, and Charlo was penalized five yards for a false start.
Second and 18 on the 22-yard line, Hollow passed and missed. On third down, Hollow found Dillon Dwelle in the end zone. Hollow ran in the extra point, sending the game to the second overtime.
Starting from the 10-yard line, Hollow tried two passes unsuccessfully, then rushed nine yards to the one. Next play he scored. On the PAT, Hollow's pass to Anderson missed, score 40-34.
On Pomeroy's possession, Slusser gained three on the first play, then gained five on second down. Third-and-two on the two-yard line, Reisinger was stopped at the line of scrimmage, then the Pirates had a false start for fourth and seven on the seven-yard line.
Slusser connected with Schmidt for the touchdown, then found Severs in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead point-after score.
