Superintendent and staff strive for academic improvement

POMEROY–The School Board heard discussion on attendance and academic improvement; approved a retirement; new and returning hires and an out-of-field teaching assignment; upcoming events; and heard other school business, according to the September 26 meeting minutes.

David Tejero has been working on various events, including strategizing on how to improve attendance, especially at the high school level.

Superintendent Rachel Gwinn will begin observing teachers and students in October and according to the minutes, affirms communication between her and the staff have included meetings, check-ins, emails, and conversations. She also indicated the staff has been doing well keeping students on task with missing assignments and keeping grades up.

The Board approved the Notice of Retirement for Joanne Pederson, acknowledging her dedication to the school district and wishing her well.

In addition, according to Board minutes, Mrs. Bye was approved to teach out-of-field for the Creative Arts class; Jim Nelson hired as School Security Office and Emma Severs will assist as Junior High Boys Basketball coach.

In other business, bills and vouchers were approved; Homecoming week is scheduled for October 23-27; advised of a Cheer Squad proposal by Chelsey Eaton; and after-school help for students in the High School Library on Tuesday and Wednesdays, courtesy of Lauen Price.

The next school board meeting is scheduled in the High School Library on October 24 at 6 p.m.
