POMEROY–Local Youth Basketball Fifth and Sixth Grade girls' teams take the champion position at the Veteran's Day weekend tournament hosted here on November 17-18.
The local youth basketball teams hosted a youth basketball tournament Veteran's Day weekend with 21 teams from around the area. The tournament featured four different brackets with 5th grade girls, 6th and 7th grade girls, 5th and 6th grade boys, and 7th and 8th grade boys. "Pomeroy had teams in each division and represented well," said Coach Brock Ledgerwood.
Pomeroy Jr. Pirates Youth Basketball 6th grade girls' team were crowned tourney champions for the 6-7 division. "Pomeroy lost a close game to Dayton to start the tournament, said Ledgerwood, but then turned it around beating Lewiston Fusion 6 in the championship game 24-11."
The 5th grade girls Jr. Pirates went 3-1 on the weekend with a hard-fought loss to LC Hawks 6th, and three dominating wins against 5th grade teams to earn the tournament championship.
The 7th and 8th boys' bracket were won by Ritzville 8 at 3-0 and Davenport 7 and 8 at 2-1. Pomeroy 7 and 8 team was 1-3 with a couple of close losses.
LC Knights dominated the 5th/6th bracket with 4-0. Pomeroy boys were 2-2 in the bracket and very competitive, giving the Knights their closest game of the tourney.
"The Youth Basketball teams are grateful to the Pomeroy School District for allowing us to host this event and to all those that helped make it a success.," said Ledgerwood.
The Jr. Pirate boys' basketball teams played Oakesdale on November 17, winning two games, but dropped the ball on the third with the varsity winning 52-28, JV win of 24-12, and a C squad loss of 18-8.
"We hope to build on our strong second half (varsity) game going into Monday's home game with Garfield-Palouse," said Coach Ledgerwood. Scoring for the varsity was Miller, 12; Nelson, 11; Kimble, 10; McKeirnan, 9; Dixon, 8; O. Wolf, 4; and Ramirez.
The Jr. High Boys game here against St. John, Endicott, LaCrosse (SJEL) on November 14, Jr. Pirates boys' varsity wins 55-6. "In the varsity game, the Wildcats were outmatched as we ran out to a 22-0 in the first quarter lead and never looked back, winning the game 55-6," said Brock.
Conrad Nelson led with 18 points, followed by Kaleb Miller 14, Rory McKeirnan 8, Tyler Dixon 5, Owen Wolf 4, Treyton Kimble 4, Colton Field 2, Christian Ramirez and Robbie Wolf.
The JV team played two quarters with a win at 13-7. Lincoln Lovgren led with 4 of those points and Jack Baser 3.
