Garfield County's Peola Road Project, completed in 2012, received the 2013 Award of Excellence/Director's Award from Washington Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. The award was presented Nov. 20 at the Washington County Leaders Conference in Vancouver, Wash. "Garfield County received this award because of the extensive 8-year planning, funding, design and construction process that it took to complete to project," Garfield County engineer Grant Morgan said.

An on-going problem with vandalism in the men's restroom at Pomeroy City Park is causing the public works crew a lot of distress and disgust and costing city taxpayers a lot of money. Public works director Tim Bemis estimated that damage to the restroom, the playground equipment in the park, and at the golf course, has cost over $1,000 to repair in materials alone. Tack on all the crew hours and we're talking real money.

Twenty-four hour dispatching will apparently be a reality in 1974, since the City of Pomeroy, Garfield County, and fire department have all budgeted funds for operation of the service. Local law enforcement officials noted that the dispatch service, to be located at the court house, will be for city, county and state police, fire department and the ambulance service. In addition to radio communication, the dispatcher will have access to statewide information through the police teletype already in operation.

Another piece of plaster fell in a junior high school building room this week, and although school authorities think the building's condition is not yet serious enough for alarm, immediate action will be forthcoming on the building. At present the building bulges two inches on one side and four inches on the other. An engineer with Busboom & Rauh, who are to build the new fire station, says this is not unusual, and that sometimes buildings have this much bulge when they are built. At present the building is being watched awfully close to see if it makes another "false move."

Pomeroy is the hardest of all places to call an audience to a Ku Klux Klan meeting, according to Rev. Curtis, Exalted Cyclops of the Klan at Vancouver, who spoke before about 125 persons in the Seeley theatre Tuesday night. Overflow audiences have been the rule rather than the exception at his meetings elsewhere throughout the country, Rev. Curtis said.

Peola Items-Zack Ferrell has leased the Peola hall and will give a grand ball on Friday evening, Dec. 23. Good music will be in attendance. Tickets, including supper, $1. Supper will be served by Mrs. P. Fitzgerald, at the old stand.
We are sorry to say our police-elect did not qualify, as we would save the sheriff the trouble of coming to this place for his man, and adding cost to the county.
