Pirates remain unbeaten

ROSALIA–The league-leading Pirates–6-0 in league, 10-0 on the season–will focus on their matchup with second-place Oakesdale (5-1) this weekend, which Head Coach Chris Wolf says will be a "great test" for the team. Gar-Pal is hovering in third with a 4-3 record and Tekoa-Rosalia, recently downed 76-46 by the Bucs, is fourth at 3-3.

The Pirates face Oakesdale there on Friday and host 0-6 Dayton on Saturday.

A 24-9 first quarter set the tone for Pomeroy's win over Tekoa-Rosalia last Friday. "The boys came out tonight and played a great game," Wolf said. "We were moving the ball against T-R's zone and getting great shots and making shots."

The Bucs were nine of 20 from the three-point arc (45%) and 49% (30 of 61) from the field, reflecting a balanced scoring attack, Wolf said.

"Defensively we were locked in all night," the coach noted. "We forced them to take shots from where we wanted them to." Wolf said T-R's leading scorer, Isaac Bone, was held to 23. "Bone takes a lot of shots and we forced him into some very tough shots," Wolf said.

Ollie Severs led the team with 17 points and Trace Roberts added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while playing great defense.

"Jett Slusser played the best game of his career with 14 points 4 rebounds, 11 assists, and 4 steals," Wolf said. "He was efficient shooting and did a great job of running our offense."

In the non league contest at Genesee, the 68-39 win was thanks to a big second half for the Pirates.

At half, Genesee trailed by eight, 32-24, but the Pirates pulled away in the third and fourth quarters, putting the game out of reach.

"We struggled defensively in the first half, getting rotated in our press and Genesee took advantage of us," Wolf said. "We were a little sloppy tonight committing 18 turnovers and we are usually around 10-12."

Genesee put up a two-three zone that the Pirates ran up against until they eased off the gas, moved the ball and found easier shots, Wolf said.

Severs finished making nine of 13 from the floor and played great in the second half, adding 11 rebounds and seven steals. Roberts popped in 14 points, snagged eight rebounds and made five assists. Boone Schmidt hit a few big shots against T-R's zone and finished with a career high 13 points.
