KITTITAS–It took a while, but after placing second at a number of consecutive meets, Curtis Winona notched a first here Saturday, January 20.
The Pirates will be in league competition Tuesday in Colfax and the League Dual Championships at Almira-Coulee-Hartline are on the schedule on Saturday, January 27.
The Kittitas County Throwdown included several larger schools, such as West Valley Yakima, Wenatchee, Goldendale, Ellensburg, Ephrata and Moses Lake, said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh.
"Curtis had another impressive outing," Slaybaugh commented. "He was dominant in his championship match controlling the whole match for a final score of 9-2. Winona (190 lb.) pinned Duarte of Moses Lake and earned the right to stand at the top of the medal podium with the 9-2 decision over Drobek of West Valley (Yakima).
Peyton Cannon also had a good day, Slaybaugh said. "He lost a tough first match by one point and then won back through to finish third." Competing in the 175 lb. division, Cannon lost a 6-5 decision to Andrade of Wenatchee, then defeated Moses Lake's Gallardo 402 and pinned West Valley's Zeller.
Levi Bowen, in the 157 lb. class, was pinned by Bendall of West Valley, then he won by fall over Rickert of Ephrata, next pinned Cole of Moses Lake and then was pinned by Kittitas's Stewart.
In the 165-lb. division, Kole Zimmerman went 1-2 on the day, losing by fall to Vigansky of West Valley, pinning Schnegelbe of Ephrata before losing to Gutzwiler of Wenatchee.
