POMEROY––After the final regular-season match at Almira Coulee Hartline High School last week, the Pirate Wrestling Team is headed to the district tournament next Saturday in Spokane.
"The guys all wrestled in top form today and are positioned well as we head into the district tournament," commented Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh.
"Curtis Winona had a dominant victory of Reardan's Conner Kline, a top-ranked opponent at his weight," Slaybaugh noted.
"Peyton Cannon demonstrated some of his best wrestling topping another top wrestler from Reardan," the coach said, "and not to be outdone, Levi Bowen showed off some great takedowns to win his only match 10-4."
Winona (190) won by technical fall over Brownham of Ritzville and pinned Kline of Reardan. Cannon (175) won by fall over Redburn of Ritzville and pinned McLoughlin of Reardan to advance. Kole Zimmerman (165) lost by technical fall to Redburn of Ritzville, and Bowen won by decision over Spain of Ritzville.
The Pirates traveled to Colfax and faced off against their league opponents, Slaybaugh said.
"League meets always bring some of the toughest competition," the coach noted. "We lost some close matches that with some small changes we think we can win the next time around. The boys will look to win those matchups when they really count in postseason."
Bowen (157) WBF vs. Burris (Colfax)
Zimmerman LBF vs. Holmberg (Dav), LBTF vs. Holling (Lib) 2-17.
Cannon (175) LBD vs. Widman (Lib), WBF vs. Teal (Wait).
Winona (190) LBF vs. Gustaveson (Dav), WBF vs. Green (Lib).
