POMEROY––The SE 1B League Champion Pirates start district play tonight in Pomeroy taking their 16-3 overall, 11-1 league record into the postseason against Liberty Christian (9-11, 7-5). A 50-48 win over Sunnyside Christian on Senior Night was a good prelude to tourney play and SJEL buckled under the Pirate offense there 65-39.
A first-round win will set up a 6 p.m. Saturday game at DeSales or hosting Tekoa-Rosalia at home. If the Pirates win two games, the third will be at 7:45 p.m. in Dayton and a guaranteed berth to state. There are three berths to state.
On Senior Night, Boone Schmidt's trey with 10 seconds to go in the back-and-forth game lifted the Pirates and then Schmidt guarded SSC's Buddy Smeenk, forcing him to take a tough shot and the Bucs knocked the rebound away as time expired 50-48 for the non-league win. Jett Slusser had a huge first quarter with three treys and finished the night with 15 points, said Head Coach Chris Wolf.
The day before, Pomeroy's strong first and third quarters scuttled SJEL's ship 65-39. Wolf praised the team for playing hard and an solid all-around game. Ollie Severs led the way with 18 points 5 rebounds and 5 steals.
