Winona state bound

SPANGLE–Pirate wrestler Curtis Winona finished second in the Regional Tournament and earned a berth in the WIAA Mat Classic XXXV this Friday and Saturday in Tacoma.

Winona pinned opponents from Almira-Coulee-Hartline and Kettle Falls before losing by fall to Brock Gustaveson of Davenport to finish with the silver medal and state berth.

First up for the senior 190 pounder will be junior Oakley Bonewell of Okanogan. Bonewell is 10-11 this season with ten pins. Winona is on the bracket opposite Gustaveson, who drew a bye in the first round.

"Curtis had a strong day with two pins before losing to top-ranked Brock Gustaveson," said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. "Curtis will head to Tacoma with his sights set on the podium."

Winona cruised through the first two matches, quickly pinning junior Paul Stout of ACH and Tyler Doleman of Kettle Falls. Against Gustaveson, the two grappled early and went out of bounds two times. Both were working for an advantage and Winona went for a high crotch takedown, but Gustaveson quickly countered and flipped Winona on his back then pinned him seconds later.

Sophomore Peyton Cannon (175) wrestled hard through a stacked bracket to nab an alternate spot for the state tournament. Cannon was pinned by Acosta of Chewelah, the won by technical fall over Kruden of Kettle Falls. Pierce of ACH took a 13-0 decision over Cannon and he finished by pinning Widham of Liberty Spangle.

Kole Zimmerman (165) lost by fall to Rasmussen of Selkirk, and was on the short end of an 11-3 decision against Schillinger of Davenport.
