At its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, April 8, Pomeroy city council unanimously passed a motion to grant a variance to David Webb that allows him to install vintage neon signs downtown in his Pomeroy City Walk project. The variance also waives the permit fee for installation, based on the fact that there will be no cost to property owners for installation of the signs.

April 21, 1999

An antique pistol that once belonged to Fred Matthies, a prominent resident of Pomeroy around the turn of the century, was donated Friday to the Garfield County Museum by his grandsons, Fred Matthies of McLean, Va., and Silas Matthies of Ronan, Mont. Grandson Fred said his grandfather was a town marshal in the early 1900s and probably carried the weapon then. The pistol is a Smith & Wesson .38 Special that utilizes modern cartridges.

April 18, 1974

The Garfield County Fair Association at its meeting last week announced a gala pumpkin contest to be held at the Garfield County Fair in September. Local residents are urged to make plans now to grow the biggest and best pumpkins. This will be a "no pumpkins barred" contest. The board didn't make any decision on what they would do with all the pumpkins after they get them.

April 21, 1949

The official roster of the Pomeroy Pioneers baseball squad was selected by the baseball committee after Wednesday's practice session with Uniontown, which the Pioneers lost 8-5 in a ragged game. The official roster is: Lester Koller, catcher; Vic Happy, assistant manager and Russ Hazard, pitchers; John Becker, 1st base; Norm Lybecker, 2nd base; Tom Becker, 3rd base; John Sparkman, ss; Burton Davis, lf; Neal Ruark, cf; and W. Parker, rf. Others on the team are: George Miller, John Capwell, score keeper; Frank Henriksen, assistant manager; Fairhurst, Landkammer, Jim Burke, Gordon Burt, and Larry Slater, manager.

One Hundred Years Ago

April 21, 1924

Opportunity to entertain distinguished visitors will be afforded Pomeroy early in June, when a motor car caravan advertising the Theodore Roosevelt highway will pass through the city en route for the rose festival at Portland. Among the travelers will be General DuPont of Wilmington, Delaware, of the E.I. DuPont DeNumours company, president of the Theodore Roosevelt highway association. Another member of the party will be Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 15, 1899

Alpowa Anecdotes-It rarely falls to a country correspondent to report any very exciting event. But this community was treated to a little sensation the other night, when John Reynolds the horse thief escaped from sheriff Russell. About one o'clock Mr. Russell awoke and found the prisoner gone. He had slipped away without awakening any of the four men. It was found that Reynolds had taken a horse of Bert Buchet's and his own saddle and bridle. They tracked him to Vineland. They found he had changed horses there, but got no more trace of him.
