Bucs falter in last home game

POMEROY––The Pirates stand firmly in first place in the SE1B Wheat Division with an 11-1 league record, 14-3 on the season, look ahead to closing the regular season at Liberty Christian on Saturday, then coincidentally play a crossover championship game against Grape Division champs Liberty Christian on Friday, May 3.

"It was a disappointing loss on our last home game of the season," said Head Coach Kyler Lovgren. "Dayton played us tough and hit the ball well. We ultimately made too many errors on defense."

Dayton chalked up four runs in the first inning and steadily brought runs across the plate the rest of the game behind 11 hits and only two errors.

Standing out for the Bucs was Nick Bryson, who went three for three and was hit by a pitch the 17th time this season, Lovgren said. Statisticians estimate Bryson may hold the hit-by-pitch school record.

The Bucs easily handled Dayton last weekend, winning 16-3 and 23-2. On April 16, hey shut out Gar-Pal 14-0.

The Pirates kicked off the opening Dayton game with an Ollie Severs solo home run and never looked back. "Severs pitched a great game and went five for six at the plate," Lovgren said.

In the second game, Dayton's younger pitching staff were pummeled by Pomeroy's 13 hits, with Trace Roberts going four of five and hitting for the cycle.

"I thought on the day it was good for us to be able to get some younger guys on the mound as our sole freshman Vinny Vecchio closed the first game and eighth grader Nolan Newberg closed the second, both kids came out and delivered for us," he said.
