POMEROY––The Pirate Jr. High track team competed in their 2nd meet of the season on Monday, April 22. It was a league meet with 8 teams participating. We had a lot of kids have a great meet and achieve significant accomplishments. Hollie Van Vogt, Tatum Jones, Christian Ramirez, and Kaleb Miller all placed in the maximum 4 events. Hollie took first in three of her four events (100, 200, javelin). In doing so she set a new personal best at 14.81 in the 100 and broke the school record for the 450g javelin with her throw of 87'3" in her first meet throwing it. It ranks her 6th in state out of 771 girls who have thrown it this season. Tatum set personal bests with her 15.62 in the 100 and her 67'4" javelin throw in only her 2nd time doing the event. Tatum also took 4th in the 100 hurdles in her first meet trying them. Christian took two 1st place finishes of his own (100 and pole vault) in addition to a 2nd and 5th place finish (long jump and 200). It was his first time trying pole vault and he now finds himself tied for 6th place in state-wide pole vault rankings. Christian's 100, 200, and long jumps were personal best showings as well. Owen Wolf is also tied for 6th in the state wide pole vault rankings with his vault of 6'6", just 6" off the top height for a 7th grader in the state. Kaleb Miller was our other athlete to place in all four events and his 1st place finish in the 400 at 58.71 is a very impressive accomplishment. It is the new jr. high record, beating a record that had been in place since 1999 (Bryce Mckeirnan). He is ranked 11th in state out of 746 athletes for jr. high including all classifications. In addition to our four athletes who placed in four events we had Sam Bagby (pole vault, long jump, 4x1) and Ariah Bingman (1600, 100 hurdles, 4x1) place in three events and 19 athletes total place in at least 1. Sam Bagby set a new personal record in the 100 (15.78) and long jump (12') and was the fastest 100 meter 6th grader at the meet. Ariah Bingman's 1600 (6:21) is also a personal best.
A lot of our kids set personal records at this meet. In addition to the ones mentioned above personal records were set by Jovanni Polanco in the 100 (16.12), Dylan Taylor in the 100 (16.09), Tyler Taylor in the 100 (16.85) and triple jump (21'10"), Owen Wolf in long jump (11'7"), Heather Davis in discus (41'1"), Mellany Lara in the 1600 (9:59), and Allie Van Vogt in discus (47'.5") and javelin (58'6"). Additionally, 100 meter personal bests were also set by Willow Bowen (17.10), Nataly Mckeirnan (16.78), and Emma Phelps (18.14). One other personal best on the day was set by Reagan Mckeirnan, who cleared 6'9" in pole vault. This vault ranks her 7th in state across all classifications. This was a great meet and our kids performed really well. Overall, our girls won the meet and our boys finished 2nd, giving us the top team score at the meet. It was a lot of fun watching so many kids build on their previous bests and try new things. Meet Location and Date: At Pomeroy on 4/22/24
