POMEROY–Sarah Meyers is a lifelong resident here, except for my college years. Growing up, her sights were set anywhere but back in Garfield County because she didn't see career opportunities. Post–college graduation, she returned to Pomeroy only for a short lay-over, however, her dad, Tom Meyers, had heard through the grapevine at The Bean Counter that there was a new program in town that was going to be hiring a coordinator. He told Sarah about the opportunity, and it was relevant to her psychology degree, and could be used as a resume builder. She begrudgingly applied, and got the position in July 2014. To make a long story short, fast forward 10 years, Sarah has since planted roots in Pomeroy by buying a house, and making community organizing around teen issues her forever career.
"I truly hope to stay in Pomeroy forever, said Sarah. "As for my role, I am the Director of the Pomeroy Partners for Healthy Families Coalition, a volunteer organization that addresses issues facing teens, such as promoting mental health and preventing early substance use. I am one of about a hundred Certified Prevention Specialists in Washington State who are experts in risk and protective factors in communities that ensure teens can reach their full potential. I love the contrast of working directly with our community members, as well as working on statewide projects with amazing people all over Washington State."
Why do you want to be part of the RTB team asked Bob Cox when Sarah was asked to be a part of the RTB committee. She believes that as a community, if everyone concentrated on giving to one fund that could grow in perpetuity, we would have a pool of funds that would be available for community needs forever. Helping to build a fund that could potentially grow to tens of millions of dollars, and give every Pomeroy High School graduate a scholarship seems worth every minute of my volunteer time.
Why should you consider contributing to RTB? "Everyone in Pomeroy can, at this very moment, earn $20,000 instantly for our fund," said Sarah. "Until December 31, for every person who fills out a bequest intention for at least 5% of their estate, an anonymous donor will deposit $20,000 into the Garfield County Forever fund. When are any of us regular people going to have the opportunity to make a $20,000 donation to a great cause? Getting your 5% bequest in as soon as you can ensures that Garfield County can earn as much of these match dollars that are up for grabs as possible.
