Orcas Island walks off with nail biter

ANACORTES–Orcas Island sank the Pirates' hopes for continuing in the 1B baseball playoffs with a 2-1 zinger here Tuesday, May 14. The loss ended Pomeroy's season with a 15-9 win-loss record.

"The kids played an amazing game," commented Head Coach Kyler Lovgren after the razor-thin 2-1 loss. "This was a hard-fought battle throughout. Ollie Severs pitched a great game, Nick Bryson came up big at the plate and in the field.

"I couldn't be more proud of how we played today," Lovgren said.

The Pirates got one run by Severs across the plate in the top of the first inning, then it was four and one-half innings of zero-zero baseball.

Severs smacked the first pitch of the game to left where in one-hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double. Trace Roberts then drove one deep to center, and Severs tagged up and safely hustled to third base. Nick Bryson came up and singled to right field, getting an RBI as Severs scored.

Orcas tied it with a run in the bottom of the sixth then held the Pirates in the top of the seventh. They managed the winning run in the bottom frame for the 2-1 win.

Severs pitched 6.1 innings, giving up five hits, three walks and striking out eight. Orcas Island's C. Jones allowed four hits, walked two and struck out 15.

The Pirates left five baserunners on the bags.

In earlier games, Almira-Coulee-Hartline captured a 15-5 win and Northport managed a 6-4 win on just three hits.
