Pirates sink Mabton 58-14

POMEROY––The Pirates started strong and didn't look back with a strong finish with 22 fourth-quarter points in their 58-14 win over Mabton in a non-league game here Friday.

Pomeroy travels to Granger to face Sunnyside Christian this Friday.

The Pirate offense chalked up 486 yards and scored seven touchdowns while holding the Vikings to just 14 points.

"Our defense played solid and battled through some adversity," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "We made some untimely penalties that gave Mabton some momentum, but we were able to steal it back most of the time."

Jett Slusser rushed for 256 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. He was 6 for 12 passing for 87 yards and one touchdown.

Kyzer Herres added two touchdowns and 147 yards rushing on 11 carries, with Rory McKeirnan and Jacob Reisinger adding a touchdown each.

"We're seeing great improvement in our young players and they're getting some good reps against bigger and stronger opponents," Kimble said.

Reisinger's eight-yard punch opened scoring in the game and quarterback Slusser ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead.

But Mabton answered with a fourth and 13 conversion when Marco Espinoza hit Francisco Moreno for the 69-yard score.

The Buccaneers came right back with a Slusser breaking free for a 49-yard scamper for six. Conversion failed but Pomeroy was ahead 14-6.

The battle wore into the second quarter when Slusser ran a two-yard touchdown and Reisinger's conversion was stopped, and the Pirates were up 20-6.

The Pirate defense made a stop and in a few plays, Slusser connected with Reisinger for a 34-yard touchdown strike. Slusser made the two-point conversion for a 28-6 half time lead.

Pomeroy's onside kick was recovered by Reggie Ott and they set up shop, but the Viking defense held. They couldn't keep the next possession going and threw an incompletion on fourth and 21.

On second and nine, Slusser broke out for a 78-yard scoring rumble and Herres punched in the conversion for a 36-6 lead.

Mabton went four and out and Herres rushed 46 yards to paydirt for a 44-6 margin as the fourth quarter got under way. Herres scored again on a five-yard plunge, and a touchdown and Rory McKeirnan capped the night.
