Volleyball notches trio of wins

POMEROY–The Lady Pirates have three wins and look to up the ante against Colton and Dayton this week. The Lady Buccaneers beat DeSales in five sets, swept Tekoa-Rosalia and downed Waitsburg 3-0 to kick off the season.

Pomeroy defeated DeSales 25-20, 28-26, 11-25, 23-25, 15-11 and T-R 25-14, 25-11, 25-20 at home, and Waitsburg 25-4, 25-8, 25-11 there.

"It has been a great start to the season for us," said Head Coach Adam Van Vogt. "The keys for the first three matches are we have done a great job of playing together, limiting unforced errors, and our serve receive has set us up for success.

"I was excited to see how we stacked up against DeSales as they went to state last year and brought back most of their roster," Van Vogt said. "We started off strong and won a convincing game one and a tight game two. DeSales fought back to take a decisive game three and a back-and-forth game 4. We started off strong in game five and were able to finish it out with good defense, scrappiness, and steady play.

"We had to play clean ball to beat Tekoa-Rosalia and we did," he said. "Major kudos to our girls for staying focused and keeping the errors down." The Lady Pirates served 92%.

At Waitsburg, the Lady Pirates held the Cardinals to four points in the first set. "To hold a team to four points you have to be disciplined and not give points away," Van Vogt said.

DeSales Stats: Taylor Gilbert: 5 kills, 5 digs, 4 aces; Molly Warren: 4 kills and 3 blocks; Kendyll Potoshnik: 4 kills; Haven Kimble: 10/11 serving with 7 assists.

T-R Stats: Olivia Cooper: 8 digs and 10/10 serving; Haven Kimble: 18/19 serving with 3 aces and 4 assists; Hollie Van Vogt: 22/22 serving with 6 aces and 9 assists; Taylor Gilbert: 9 kills and 4 digs.

Waitsburg Stats: Taylor Gilbert: 9 kills and 5 aces; Molly Warren: 7 kills; Carmen Fruh: 3 blocks, 3 assists, and 3 aces; Hollie Van Vogt: 13 aces and 12 assists.
