Publishers honored for museum contributions

The Olde Yakima Letterpress Museum honored Charlotte and Loyal Baker, publishers of the Dayton Chronicle, for contributions made to the museum in Union Gap, Wash., with honorary Journeyman Leather Aprons, in recognition of "outstanding leadership in the graphic arts and newspaper industries." The couple donated several stands of hand-set type and other letterpress printing items to the museum, historical artifacts left over from the Dayton Chronicle's decades as Dayton's and Columbia County's community newspaper and commercial printing shop. The Olde Yakima Letterpress Museum, co-located with the Central Washington Agricultural Museum, was founded by Rev. Fred Hutchison and Dr. Ruth M. Bishop, and demonstrates for future generations, the history of moveable type and printing methods. The presentation was made by Tom Land at the Pioneer Fall Festival in Waitsburg September 15. The Bakers also publish the Pomeroy community newspaper, the East Washingtonian.
