Lady Bucs roll over Colton, Dayton

POMEROY––Squads from Colton and Dayton buckled under the Lady Pirates in league matches last week, the girls downing the Lady Wildcats in three sets and the Dayton Bulldogs in three.

This week the Lady Pirates visited Oakesdale, and tonight, September 26, they host Garfield-Palouse. Saturday is the annual Border Battle on the Pomeroy court.

The Lady Buccaneers counted the first six points against Colton and kept the pace the remainder of the match, winning 25-18, 25-8, 25-18. Pomeroy countered Colton's strong start in the third set, eventually overtaking the Lady Wildcats for the win.

Colton has some strong servers and keep the ball in play well so our serve receive had to be on point to win," said Coach Adam Van Vogt.

"All of our girls had a good night," Van Vogt said, "but it all starts with a good serve receive and Taylor Gilbert and Olivia Cooper in particular did a great job of getting us going with their passing." Van Vogt praised Gilbert's steady play in the front and back row that has been a stabilizing presence for the team.

The Pirates had their best serving match so far, hitting 95%. Haven Kimble, Sadie Klaveano, and Olivia Cooper went a perfect 25/25 combined with 6 aces and Hollie Van Vogt added 27/28 with 8 aces, Van Vogt said.

At Dayton, the Lady Pirates cruised to the three-set win 25-11, 25-16, 25-14.

"Dayton was the scrappiest team we've played yet," Van Vogt noted. "I was really impressed with how many balls they kept in play, making it important that we stay aggressive while at the same time not giving them points through errors."

The Lady Bucs responded, he said, with their "most complete game of the season thus far."

Pomeroy's attack was balanced, with five hitters having at least four kills. Kendyll Potoshnik had her most consistent match of the year hitting, leading the group with five.

Van Vogt recognized Carmen Fruh for her best match of the year. "Molly Warren and Fruh were very active at the net," he said.

Pirate Varsity volleyball team improves to 5-0 overall, 4-0 in league, and third in the Washington State Coaches Poll rankings.
