POMEROY––The Pirates' focus this week will be on the league opener against what Head Coach Kyle Kimble terms is "a very good Garfield-Palouse team" after the football team mopped up Sunnyside Christian, 70-0.
The scoring frenzy saw Jacob Reisinger leading with a trio of Pirate touchdowns and 99 rushing yards.
Three Pirates, Jett Slusser, Boone Schmidt and Reggie Ott each notched a pair of touchdowns as the Bucs rolled up 50 first-quarter points. Slusser marched 74 yards on five carries and completed five of five passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Schmidt caught one pass for 55 yards and a touchdown, and Ott received one pass for a 16-yard touchdown.
Slusser opened the scoring with a 16-yard rumble for six, plus the point after. For an encore, Slusser romped 17 yards to pay dirt.
Schmidt intercepted a Knight throw and returned it 53 yards for six. Reisinger broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run and moments later punched in from the one yard line for another touchdown. He topped off his scoring in the quarter with his third touchdown from the 18.
Schmidt was on the receiving end of a Slusser bomb for a 55-yard score.
There was no score in the second quarter and the third and fourth quarters were relatively low.
"It was great to get our young kids some great experience this week as we get ready to start league play versus a very good Garfield-Palouse team," Kimble said. "They're going to be well coached, athletic, and physical."
Defensively, the team shared the wealth with Schmidt and Conrad Nelson each making three tackles and a handful including Cesar Morfin, Peyton Cannon, Kyzer Herres (2), Reisinger, Rory McKeirnan and Slusser made tackles. Kaleb Miller and Robby Van Vogt each counted a quarterback sack.
