POMEROY––Three unbeatens duked it out last week-Pomeroy, Oakesdale and Gar-Pal-and both of the Lady Pirates' opponents sailed away with wins. Oakesdale cruised through the Buccaneers in three sets and the Lady Vikings got quite a battle, taking the match in five hard-fought sets.
Pomeroy visited St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse and Tekoa-Rosalia this week and will compete in the Pea and Lentil Tournament in Genessee Saturday before visiting Waitsburg October 8.
The team is 5-2.
Oakesdale dominated in three sets, 25-10, 25-19, 25-13.
"We had a rough start in the first game," said Head Coach Adam Van Vogt, "but rebounded to play a competitive game two. In game three we were down 16-13 when Oakesdale went on a run to put the game away. It was unfortunate to start slow and finish allowing a long run but most of the night saw us play good volleyball in a tough environment.
"We didn't give many points away easily," Van Vogt said. "The night saw a lot of rallies where we made the first mistake too often to win but also saw us compete and fight for points."
The five-set loss to Gar-Pal saw the Lady Vikings spurt ahead 15-12 in the deciding set, set scores 13-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-16, 12-15.
The Lady Pirates nearly buckled in the first set, then dropped the second set, but rebounded to win sets three and four, 25-21 and 25-16.
"We did a good job of matching their play in game two," Van Vogt said, "and used it to turn the tables and take games three and four with some really scrappy play and determined rallies.
"We led at the halfway mark of game five but couldn't quite pull it out, with a five-point run by Gar-Pal being a little too much to overcome in the shorter game," he said.
"I'm proud of how we battled and although it is never fun to lose in five, these types of matches are great experience for this young group."
Van Vogt said the team was dealing with illness and injuries, but credited the team for capitalizing on the experiences to learn and grow stronger.
