Slusser sets school record

POMEROY––Pirate quarterback Jett Slusser had a stellar night-rushing for eight touchdowns and setting a school record while guiding the Pirate team to a 68-42 over the tough Garfield-Palouse Vikings here last Friday.

The Pirates are 1-0 in the SE1B Wheat Division along with Tekoa-Rosalia and Waitsburg, with SJEL, Dayton and Gar-Pal on the bottom of the six-school league with 0-1 marks. Pomeroy heads to SJEL Friday.

Slusser rushed for 345 yards and eight touchdowns to score 56 of Pomeroy's 68 points. He completed seven of 12 passes for 129 yards with one interception.

Defensively, Jacob Reisinger, Boone Schmidt and Slusser notched five tackles, and Slusser counted one interception. Kyzer Herres, who scored the other Pirate touchdown, made four tackles.

"This was a physical game that our kids really stepped up to," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "Garfield Palouse has played some really tough games early this season and I fully expect them to be a formidable opponent in the playoffs. They are way better than their 0-4 record indicates right now."

Kimble praised the Pirate defense for stepping up at key times and making critical fourth-down stops.

The Vikings hung with the Bucs in the first quarter, trailing by 10 points on touchdowns by Bryce Pfaff and two by Lane Collier.

But the Pirates' Slusser and Herres put up three Pomeroy touchdowns to one by the Vikings in the second stanza, and two more in the third to start the running clock. Vikings Landon Orr and Collier added two scores in the fourth.
