"This fall has provided favorable weather conditions for prescribed burning on the Umatilla National Forest," said Chris Johnson, Deputy Fire Staff Officer. "We've completed the 3,500 acre Gulliford Prescribed Burn west of Ukiah, Oregon and just initiated the 4,300 acre North Wenatchee Prescribed Burn south of Pomeroy, Washington," said Johnson. Four additional prescribed burns are planned if weather conditions allow.

October 20, 1999

Two weeks ago, Jack Krell and his friend Ethan Williams made a sentimental visit to Garfield County Memorial Hospital. Just about a year ago during hunting season, Jack experienced a medical emergency while hunting with Ethan in the north county. After running two miles, Ethan flagged down April McGreevy, who used her cell phone to call for emergency assistance. It took two hours and a 4-wheel-drive rig to reach Jack's location.

October 17, 1974

The U.S. Forest Service Northwest Region is prepared to reduce prices it charges logging firms to cut trees in national forests by as much as 30 per cent. Despite the cut in is so-called sale index figure, a Forest Service spokesman said, "so far bidding has remained quite high," in the face of a severe drop in lumber prices and a stagnant market.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

October 20, 1949

Fire Chief Les Krouse got to try out the county's new fire truck a bit in advance of everyone else Friday when the Lewiston Junior Chamber of Commerce staged their fire prevention week parade. Krouse reported the truck is a real beauty. "The prettiest truck in the parade," said the Pomeroy chief. Krouse said he expect the truck to be delivered in about a week.

One Hundred Years Ago

October 18, 1924

A special examiner for the U.S. bureau of pensions was here this week conducting an inquiry into some applications made by volunteers who served during the Nez Perce Indian uprising in 1877. Among the survivors of the company commanded by Capt. John Elliot of the Pataha flat, who made an expedition of 25 days or more up Snake river and Joseph creek, are Sam Shawley, W.T. (Barney) Owsley, Frank McBrearty, Tom Crumpacker, J.W. Ball and Homer Bounds. The main object of the eximiner's trip to Pomeroy was to take testimony that would determine whether or not Capt. Elliot's command served 30 days.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 14, 1899

In a recent letter to Miss Mary Williams Mr. H.E. Hubbell, founder of Short Hand Music, authorizes her to say that he will teach all her pupils over again free this winter when he comes west to examine them. Mr. Hubbell has never before made such an offer to his 997 teachers, but does so in this case that those who wish to become teachers may feel doubly assured of making the required 100 grade. Miss Williams is the only teacher of this new science of music west of the Rockies.
