The Pomeroy Pirate volleyball team ran its South East 1B league record last week, defeating Garfield-Palouse 25-10, 25-17, 25-12 at home, then defeating St. John-Endicott 25-17, 25-13, 25-22. Against Gar-Pal, Pirate head coach Jim Greene pointed to the play of setter Ireland Mayfield as a key to the sweep. "I felt that Ireland had two sets of nearly perfect play from the setter's position," he said. The coach complimented the junior setter for her "great choices and delivering the ball where her hitters could get a good attack on the ball."

In the four short months that he's been pastor of Pomeroy's Assembly of God church, the Rev. John Vantrease has seen his congregation more than double in size. Former professional trumpet player Frank Gonzales, now an evangelist, is bringing a group of young people known as the "God Squad" to our community to hold a series of meetings to be held at the First Christian Church beginning Oct. 31. The God Squad are young people who conduct prevention programs and seminars in schools throughout North America. Several members are former dope addicts and gang leaders who have found a new life in Christ.

October 27, 1949

The Kiwanians learned at Monday noon's meeting that they are killing themselves with their mouth. So said Paul O. Sampson, food and nutrition expert from St. Louis, Missouri. Among other things, Sampson revealed that people are eating the wrong combinations of food. White bread should be cut out of the diet, as should sugar and pork. About the subject of baldness, Sampson said that the hair that isn't on the head is lost, and added that if a person wants to keep what hair he has left, plenty of molasses and cherries should be included in the diet.

October 25, 1924

William Paul is here from Florence, Idaho, and shows some dust taken from placer diggings which recalls to mind the gold bags brought down from that district by the early-day miners. Mr. Paul and his brother have a claim covering 400 acres of land said to be appraised by the inspector of the state of Idaho at $6.00 a yard for its mineral value.

October 21, 1899

Since our last issue, hostilities have commenced between England and the Transvaal and the war is now on in earnest. Although England has been making all preparations for the worst, she was still endeavoring to settle the difficulties by diplomatic means, when war was precipitated by the Transvaal troops attacking the British forces. Thus the responsibility of commencing hostilities rests with the Boers, and they must take the consequences.
