Pirates lock Wheat Division Championship

WAITSBURG–With a 56-0 win over the Waitsburg Cardinals, the Pirate football team solidified its hold on the Wheat Division top spot.

The undefeated Buccaneers visit Dayton Friday to finish out the regular season. The Pirates' first playoff game will be against the winner of the Liberty Christian v. DeSales game, at that opponent's field on Friday, Nov. 1.

"Jett Slusser had another great day on offense with 199 yards rushing and four touchdowns along with going 6 for 8 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns," said Head Coach Kyle Kimble.

Defensively, the Pirates shut out the Redbirds. "The Pirate defense played well," Kimble said, "blanking a very good Cardinal team. Peyton Cannon and Boone Schmidt had great games on defense."

The Pirate defense quelled any offense from the Cards, stuffing their first drive. But a fumble gave Waitsburg the ball, only to see the defense stop them again.

Pomeroy's next drive covered 74 yards in eight plays, Slusser rumbling in from five yards out.

After stopping the Cards, the offense scored again on a 57-yard Slusser race, and he tacked on the point after for a 14-0 lead.

Waitsburg's Isa Reyes broke a 50-yard gain deep into Pirate territory, but the D held, taking over on the one-yard line. The pirates covered 99 yards in seven plays, Kyzer Herres juking into the end zone for a 20-0 lead.

Again the defense quashed the Cards and the Pirates answered by bounding 47 yards in two plays, Slusser punching in from the two and running the PAT for a 28-0 lead.

After going four and out, Pomeroy covered the 65 yards separating them from the goal line in five plays, Slusser rambling in from the nine and a 34-0 lead.

Waitsburg's next possession was hurt by Peyton Cannon's 19-yard sack, giving the Pirates great field position at the Cardinal 27. Slusser threw to Jacob Reisinger for the six-yard touchdown and Herres ran in the extra points for a 40-0 lead at half time.

Pomeroy got the ball to start the third quarter and Robby Van Vogt gave the team good field position at midfield. The five-play drive ended with Reisinger catching a 20-yard Slusser pass.

The Pirates scored in the fourth quarter, a nine-yard rush by Rory McKeirnan, and he added the PAT for the 56-0 final.
