Van Vogt: Lady Pirates peaking at season's end

POMEROY––The Lady Pirates hosted opponents Dayton and Oakesdale last week, defeating the Lady Bulldogs in four sets and battling top-ranked Oakesdale through five sets before bowing out 15-7 in the fifth set.

Pomeroy is 9-4 overall, 8-4 in SE1b Wheat Division behind number two Garfield-Palouse and first-place Oakesdale.

Oakesdale visited and the Lady Bucs had difficulty passing to drop the first set, but went on to force a fifth set. "We also showed great resolve in our next match against Oakesdale," said Head Coach Adam Van Vogt.

"We played some really good volleyball in front of a really supportive home crowd," Van Vogt said. "That energy and enthusiasm was really appreciated and felt by our girls."

The Lady Buccaneers settled down and battled them hard before ultimately falling in five sets, 25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 24-26, 15-7.

Even in the last match we played a lot of long rallies where we couldn't quite get the point, the coach said.

"That being said," he continued, "I loved that we didn't give easy points and that we played with confidence and consistency while taking two games from the team ranked number one in the state.

"Our girls stayed aggressive, scrappy, and confident and it goes without saying that if we can play like that the rest of the season we'll experience a lot of success the next several weeks," Van Vogt said.

Coach Van Vogt believes the Lady Pirates have played their best volleyball in the past couple weeks, finishing with their strong match against Oakesdale last Thursday.

"This is a talented group of girls and we are gelling and raising our game at the right time as our regular season comes to a close this week," he sid.

Pirate Varsity volleyball beat Dayton 25-10, 25-14, 24-26, 25-9 October 15. "We did a great job of limiting mistakes and keeping pressure on Dayton in the first two sets and after jumping out to an 8-1 lead in set one, never looked back until game three," Van Vogt said.

Dayton fought hard in set three and the Lady Pirates missed as many serves in that set as the other three sets combined with the result being a loss in that third set, he said.

"Kudos to our girls though," Van Vogt said, "as they got refocused and played well in set four to win the night and take our third straight match over the last two weeks.

"I like that we had to play through some adversity as learning to overcome difficult circumstances will help us with playoffs approaching," he said
