Lady Pirates bumped in first round

POMEROY–The Lady Bucs are in the consolation bracket of the SE1B Volleyball Tourney after DeSales took a 3-0 opening-round win. Third-place Pomeroy hosted fourth-place Liberty Christian yesterday in a loser-out match (full story next week).

With a win, the Lady Pirates would face the loser of Oct. 30's No. 2 Gar-Pal v. No. 1 Walla Walla Valley Academy Friday at Pomeroy's gym.

The Lady Pirates finished the SE1B Wheat Division in third with a 9-5 league, 10-6 overall record after splitting the final two regular-season matches, falling to Gar-Pal before a Senior Night win over SJEL.

"We have had some great rallies, played some great ball this month," said Head Coach Adam Van Vogt, "and have all of the skills necessary to make a playoff run. The key for us as we enter playoffs is to stay confident, positive, and consistent and I look for us to do just that as we enter the post-season."

Against Gar-Pal, the Lady Pirates were tough and played confidently but had a rough start,.

"I thought our girls fought hard and we played some good volleyball, but we never found a consistent rhythm," he said. "We served 92% and had some very solid technical play, we just had a hard time matching their energy that they brought during their senior night."

The squad bounced back at home versus St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse on Senior Night. "We recognized Isabella Field and Taylor Gilbert, who are our two captains," Van Vogt said.

"We served 93% as a team and I thought we had one of our best passing matches of the season," he said. "We had more hitting errors than I would like, and we'll need to clean that up, but we overcame that and the girls made adjustments that when they made errors and that was great to see."
