DAYTON–The Pomeroy Pirates finished the 2024 football campaign with an unblemished 5-0 league record with an 84-30 win over Dayton and first place in the SE1B Wheat Division, and they head to Richland on Friday to take on the also unbeaten Liberty Christian Patriots (5-0, 8-0) to secure the SE1B number one seed against NE1B rivals. It was the Bucs' highest-scoring game of the season.
The Pirates had a fight on their hands early, but Jett Slusser and Kyzer Herres combined for a series of touchdowns while the Pomeroy defense staunched the Bulldog attack and put the game out of reach.
"We struggled to contain number16 [Denver Hutchens]," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "We weren't in bad position, the kid is just a play maker. Luckily, our DB's improved throughout the game and were able to limit his receptions in the second quarter through the end of the game."
Slusser was a force with 190 yards on 10 carries and five touchdowns, plus he thre for 78 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Slusser lead the defense with 10 solo tackles.
Herres packed the mail five times for 113 years and two touchdowns, caught a 49-yard touchdown pass and rambled 70 yards on a kick off return for a score.
In the first quarter, Slusser, rushed for the first three Pirate touchdowns on runs of 41, 15 and 32 yards. The Bulldogs looked to the Jordan McCowen-to-Hutchens combination for two of three first-quarter scores that found the Pirates with a 20-18 lead going into the second quarter.
That's when the Buccaneer defense buckled down and blanked the Bulldogs in the second quarter to build a decisive 60-18 lead. The Pirates added three more touchdowns in the second half during the running clock, and the Bulldogs added one score per quarter.
