RICHLAND–The Pirates dropped a tough one to the Liberty Christian Patriots 34-68 in the SE1B league championship game here November 1.
The loss sends Pomeroy into the NE1B/SE1B crossover as the number two seed. The Bucs will face NE1B No. 7 Cusick on the home field, kickoff 6 p.m.
"I'm super proud of our boys for their grit and effort during the game," said Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "We played the number one team in the state tough for three quarters."
The Patriot struck first but Pomeroy responded with an 11-yard Kyzer Herres punch for six and Jett Slusser's point-after for an 8-6 lead.
Two more Liberty touchdowns pushed the difference to 22-8 after one quarter.
Jacob Reisinger caught a 13-yard pass from Herres for Pomeroy's next score, but LC's Ryker Wagerman returned the kick off 50 yards for a 28-16 Patriot lead.
The Pirates came right back at Liberty, Herres making a 92-yard kick off return and Slusser adding the extra point for a 28-28 tie. The Patriots chalked up one more score before half and a nail-biting 36-28 lead.
Pomeroy scored first in the second half on a 15-yard Boone Schmidt touchdown pass from Slusser. The PAT failed for a 36-24 LC lead.
From then on, Liberty cruised with touchdown after touchdown to put the game out of reach.
Slusser carried the pigskin 28 times for 67 yards and one touchdown, and completed 44% (8/18) of passes for 97 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Herres made 13 carries for 43 yards and Reisinger got the ball 11 times for 34 yards.
Tackles were distributed among at least seven Pirates, with Conrad Nelson and Schmidt crunching 3½ and Reisinger and Slusser making 2½.
