Pirates in Sweet Sixteen

POMEROY––The Pirates downed Cusick to secure a berth in the 16-team state football playoffs and will play the first game of that tournament Friday at Lybecker Field versus the Odessa Tigers, kick off 7 p.m.

The 9-1 Bucs face the 7-2 Tigers, who defeated Sunnyside Christian 66-18 to set up the upcoming game.

"Jett Slusser, Jacob Reisinger, and Kyzer Herres ran wild on Cusick early and often," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble.

"Our defense really stepped up and played well," Kimble said. "This marks first time that Cusick has been shut out all season, which speaks to the disciplined play and solid tackling of our defense.

"We're looking forward to starting our run in the playoffs," he said.

Slusser made 11 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and Jacob Reisinger gained 114 yards on nine carries for a pair of scores, with Herres garnering 82 yards on six carries and one touchdown.

The air attack was efficient with Slusser hitting Reisinger and Kaleb Miller for touchdown completions, making two of seven passes for 33 yards.

Conrad Nelson had a nose for the ball, counting seven tackles, and Rory McKeirnan and Miller each counted 3½ and Peyton Cannon chalked up two tackles.

The Pirates received the kick and quickly counted the first score, a 45-yard ramble by Herres. Slusser scored the next two touchdowns and then Reisinger punched in from the seven and the Buccaneers were firmly in command, 32-0 after the first quarter.

Two second quarter touchdowns on a Miller reception from Slusser and a 20-yard Reisinger run gave the Pirates a 48-0 lead and the running clock for the game's remainder.

Reisinger finished Pirate scoring with a 21-yard pass reception from Slusser in the third quarter.
