Pirates clear Odessa

POMEROY––The Pirates hit the road to South Bend this weekend for a 1 p.m. Saturday, November 23, playoff game against the Naselle Comets following the Bucs' convincing 52-12 win over the 7-2 Odessa Tigers here last Friday.

The Pirates are in the quarter finals of the 1B State Bracket, and 9-1 Neah Bay and 9-0 Naselle are the only west-side teams remaining. DeSales (8-1) faces top-ranked Liberty Christian (9-0) Friday, Nov. 22 at Fran Risch Stadium in Richland. In addition to the Pomeroy-Naselle matchup, other Saturday, Nov. 23, games are Neah Bay v. Almira-Coulee-Hartline (8-2) at 1 p.m. at Lions Field in Moses Lake, and Garfield-Palouse (5-5) facing Wilbur-Creston-Keller (10-0), 4 p.m. at Lions Field.

Odessa took a first-quarter lead then the Pirates stomped on the gas, scoring the rest of the game's points while the Tigers struggled against Pomeroy's defense.

The Pirates appeared to have a fight on their hands as the Tigers stopped the Buc offense then struck first on a 60-yard scamper by Odessa senior Corbyn Neilson. The PAT was nixed.

Pirate quarterback Jett Slusser rambled 22 yards to tie the game 6-6, and chipped in the two-point conversion for an 8-6 Pomeroy lead. Slusser carried the pigskin 24 times for 233 yards (9.7 yd. avg.) and three touchdowns, and completed 8 of 15 for 53%, with touchdown throws to Jacob Reisinger and Boone Schmidt.

Kyzer Herres made 12 carries for 88yards and two touchdown, no fumbles.

Defensively, the Pirates spread the wealth among nine players, with Reisinger notching nine solo tackles and Schmidt counting 5½.

But Odessa answered with a Tucker Walter score on a one-yard punch, with the PAT being stopped for a 12-8 Tiger lead and what turned out to be their last scoring of the game.

Pomeroy chalked up two more rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. Kyzer Herres busted loose for a 46-yard touchdown (PAT failed) and Slusser turned an Odessa fumble recovered by Jacob Reisinger at the Tiger 33-yard line into a 67-yard sprint to the end zone and a 20-12 first-quarter lead.

In the second quarter, Reisinger gathered in Slusser's 71-yard pass for six, Slusser broke a 55-yard sprint to pay dirt, ending the first half with a 36-12 lead.

Kyzer Herres blew away 42 yards for a third-quarter Pirate score, Reisinger making the PAT on a three-yard dive, and Boone Schmidt caught a Slusser throw between two Tiger defenders for the Buccaneers' fourth-quarter touchdown. Slusser made the point after for the 52-12 final.
