Comets blast Pirates from playoffs

SOUTH BEND, WASH.–The Naselle Comets repeated their playoff denial of further Pomeroy Pirate football play with a hard-won 60-50 decision here last weekend, sending the Buccaneers home for the season with a 10-2 overall mark. Naselle faces Wilbur-Creston-Keller this Saturday in Moses Lake.

With the Pirates trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Jett Slusser scored back-to-back touchdowns to tie it 44-44. Slusser rushed 31 times for 187 yards and four touchdowns, and passed 12/21 for 211 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions

But the Bucs couldn't contain Comet Jack Strange who gained 281 yards and four touchdowns, and quarterback Leith Chadwick, who completed 7 of 10 for 130 yards and three touchdowns, with two of those touchdown throws going to Strange.

Jacob Reisinger and Kyzer Herres were Slusser's touchdown receivers, Reisinger making five catches for 137 yards.

Big on defense was Conrad Nelson with 6½ tackles, with Boone Schmidt's 5½ stops close behind. Reisinger and Slusser each made 4½ tackles and Kaleb Miller nabbed three Comet ballcarriers.

Pomeroy scored first on a 78-yard breakaway by Herres, with Slusser's PAT, an 8-0 lead.

Naselle tied it up on a Caiden Burke punch of seven yards, and a Strange extra point for 8-8.

Strange put the Comets ahead with a 43-yard catch from Leith Chadwick and the booted PAT made it 15-8 Comets. Slusser zipped 30 yards to pay dirt for Pomeroy's second touchdown of the first period and a 15-14 Naselle lead.

Herres capped the first quarter with an interception of a Chadwick throw, giving the Buccaneers the ball on the 34-yard line. Pomeroy moved to midfield, turning the ball over on downs, then the Comets marched 50 yards in seven plays, scoring on a 29-yard Chadwick to Strange connection.

Again the Pirate drive stalled and Naselle covered 54 yards in seven plays for a 28-14 lead.

Pomeroy advanced on runs by Slusser and Herres, covering 75 yards in nine plays, capped by a 26-yard Slusser to Herres pass and with Slusser's PAT, a single touchdown difference at half time: 28-22.

The Pirates kicked to Naselle to open the third and Strange exploited a breakdown for a 50-yard romp for six on the first play. With Strange's two-point convert, it was now a two-touchdown difference: 36-22.

Next drive, Slusser and Herres again attached on the ground, getting to the Naselle 20 before being held on fourth-and-two. After the Pirates stopped Naselle on a fourth-and-11 Kaleb Miller sack of quarterback Chadwick, they followed with a one-yard Slusser punch for six and a Slusser-to-Schmidt PAT to shave the difference to six points, 36-30.

Starting the fourth, the Comets answered with an extended drive finishing with a 22-yard Strange touchdown, extending the lead to 14 points, 44-30.

Pomeroy's next possession covered 51-yards in seven plays, with Slusser sashaying in from two yards, and throwing to Schmidt for the PAT and, again, a six-point difference.

Cesar Morfin again kicked and the Pirates got the ball. Slusser broke for daylight an a 47-yard gain to the Naselle 22. Herres followed with 10 yards and Slusser's two carries gave the Pirates first and goal on the nine. Slusser punched in and the failed PAT left it 44-44.

Strange scored again for the Comets, 52-44, and Pomeroy's next drive stalled after moving 41 yards. Two plays later, Naselle added an insurance touchdown on a 42-yard sprint by Strange.

The Pirates went to the air and four straight Slusser passes moved the ball to the end zone on a 10-yard throw to Reisinger. Score: 60-50. The Comets ran out the clock to finish.
