POMEROY–The City Council appointed James Fuchs as interim councilman, approved an inter-local agreement for law enforcement and court services, and discussed grant funds according to the minutes of their Dec. 10 meeting.
To fill the seat left empty by Jim Harris's retirement, the council appointed James Fuchs who will serve as interim councilman until the seat is filled by the fall 2025 election.
The council approved an updated inter-local agreement with Garfield County for law enforcement and court services.
Mayor Jack Peasley announced that the City has received two grants. One is from the Harold and Helen Shepherd Foundation, awarding the City $122,302.67 to fund pool passes, a new chlorinator and exterior painting at the Pomeroy Municipal Pool, and grounds maintenance and a new mower for the Pomeroy City Cemetery. Part of the funding includes $75,000 toward a liner for the pool. The city is looking for additional funding sources for the liner, which is estimated to cost $250,000.
The second grant is from the Washington Transportation Improvement Board, awarding $999,700 to Pomeroy's Main Street Sidewalk Project. The project cost is estimated at $1.4 million, so further funding sources will be needed. The City plans to complete as much of the project as they can with TIB funding and apply next year if needed.
In further business, the council decided to gather input from Pomeroy residents about their sentiments regarding deer in the city limits. There have been instances of feeding deer in town and several people have approached the council regarding the issue.
