Pirates chalk up trio of wins

By Loyal Baker

POMEROY––The Pirates won three games last week, adding to a win over Genessee for a four-game winning ramble in SE 1B play, edging Tekoa-Rosalia 56-35, clobbering SJEL 59-14 and defeathering the Cardinals 55-13. The Pirates are 6-1 in league, 7-5 overall.

Dayton visits Friday and Garfield-Palouse comes to town Saturday then the Bucs set sail for Colton Tuesday, January 21 as the last couple weeks of the regular season approach.

In spite of coming out "flat," the Pirates were hitting from the arc and were effective on offense, Head Coach Chris Wolf said. "Offensively we did some good things tonight and moved the ball well and got our guards some great looks," Wolf said. "We shot the ball well from 3 in the first half and it got us out to a 15-point halftime lead."

The coach was disappointed on Buccaneer defense but praised Jett Slusser for hitting five of seven threes, which helped Pomeroy to a comfortable lead. Slusser finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Braxton McKeirnan counted 13 points, eight boards and four assists.

Friday night's contest against SJEL was the Pirates' best game of the season, Wolf said. "We did a good job of closing out on shooters tonight and contested shots," he added. "Offensively we did a good job of finding the right matchup and getting the ball to the proper spot. We rebounded well tonight with 43 rebounds as a team and had 13 offensive rebounds which we took advantage of."

Herres had 23 points and six rebounds to lead as game-high scorer. Jacob Reisinger had 14 points and played his best floor game of the season, Wolf said. "Reisinger was under control tonight and made good decisions which led to some easy baskets for us." Slusser had 11 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

The 55-13 win over Waitsburg was credited to Pomeroy's balanced scoring attack, Wolf said. McKeirnan led Pirate scoring with nine.

"Everybody got in the game, and we were able to get everyone a shot attempt tonight," Wolf said. "We rebounded the ball well as a team. We played hard and defended well the whole game."
