POMEROY–As the community steps into 2025, it's an ideal moment to take a quick look back at the year that was, and a deeper look forward at the work still ahead. Below is an update on where we stand as a community, and what we can expect in the months ahead.
Booster Pump Installation at 18th St. and Columbia.
The Booster Pump installation at 18th St. and Columbia is well underway. DW Excavating, based out of Davenport, was awarded the contract in November, and construction began in December. The successful installation of this pump is critical for addressing the high-pressure water zone in the area and will lift the construction moratorium that has been in place for the Depot Addition on the east side of town. Once completed, this project will open the door for new development and further growth in the area. The work is expected to conclude by July 2025, and we are optimistic about the improvements this will bring to our infrastructure.
Community Heart & Soul Program
The Community Heart & Soul program, a grassroots initiative aimed at fostering deeper connections between the residents and the City's leadership, will launch in February. Funded by a generous grant from the Innovia Foundation, along with matching contributions from the City, County, and Port, this program will help ensure that our community's most important values and concerns are integrated into our ongoing development and decision-making processes.
The program's approach is simple but powerful: it's about listening to everyone and building a foundation of pride in our shared home. Through Community Heart & Soul, we will better understand what truly matters to you, our residents. The initiative will kick off with the hiring of a coordinator, a position that will be a joint effort with the Garfield County ADO (Area Development Organization) and SEWEDA (Southeast Washington Economic Development Association). This coordinator will be tasked with guiding the program, working with stakeholders, and ensuring that our community's voice is heard at every stage. The city is eager to find an energetic and dedicated individual to help lead us through this exciting chapter of community improvement and unity.
Public Safety Ordinance Updates
City Council has been working diligently on several fronts to improve the appearance and safety of our community. One significant area of focus is the update to our Public Safety Ordinances, designed to address pressing concerns related to property upkeep, zoning, and public spaces. These updated ordinances will help create a cleaner, safer environment and ensure that our city is a welcoming place for residents and visitors alike. The Council remains committed to finding practical, effective solutions that balance the needs of our diverse community while maintaining a high quality of life for all.
Historic Preservation Commission (HPC)
We have completed the necessary updates and Ordinance 948 provides for the restoration of this body. The HPC will work closely with the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation to protect and enhance the buildings in our Downtown Historic District. If you are interested in being part of this team, please contact City Hall at [email protected] by January 31 with a brief statement indicating why you would like participate.
On behalf of the Council and myself, we appreciate your ongoing support of our efforts. Pomeroy's greatest strength has always been its people. Together, we can build a community where everyone thrives and continues to proudly call it home.
The next Community Forum meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Pataha Flour Mill. Lunch will be provided by SEWEDA.
