Lady Pirate Hollie Van Vogt dives for the basketball with Lady Bulldog Lila Hutchens (10) and teammate Reagan McKeirnan (22) also moving in to stir up some action. The Lady Pirates blew out their opponents with big second and third quarters for a 37-22 win and, for now, a solid third place in league.
POMEROY–With tough and undefeated Garfield Palouse, 75-52 victors here last Saturday, and 10-1 Oakesdale in first and second, respectively, the Lady Pirates are in third place with a 6-3 record, 9-6 overall.
The Lady Buccaneers pulled away from Dayton on Friday, riding two big middle quarters to a 37-23 win on the home maple.
Pomeroy scored well against the Lady Vikings, but their opponents' handful of points each quarter added up. The Lady Pirates trailed by only three points after the first eight minutes, but weren't able to adequately defend Gar-Pal's Flansburg, who counted 10 first-quarter points, 17 in the second stanza, and 10 points in the second hal. Flansburg finished with a game-high 35 points.
Leading for the Buccaneers was Hollie Van Vogt, Kiersten Bartels and Reagan McKeirnan, all with nine points. Pomeroy wasn't bad from the field: 30% compared to Gar-Pal's 34%, but the Lady Vikes' 48% from the three-point arc spelled doom for Pomeroy.
Facing their Dayton rivals, the Lady Pirates threw scoring from nearly the entire team at the Lady Bulldogs, nine of the ten on the floor contributing points to the scoreboard. Leading the way was Reagan McKeirnan with eight and Molly Warren with six. McKeirnan's strong six-point second period helped lift the Pirates.
Asotin was able to slip by with a 32-31 win on Jan. 14. The difference in the game was Pomeroy's five-point first quarter. After that, they played Asotin evenly but not with enough margin, quarter by quarter, to make up the three-point deficit.
