OAKESDALE–The Nighthawks gave the Pirates ample open shots but the team was uncharacteristically cold as ice, dropping behind 17-0 after the first eight minutes and ending up losing the game by 13 points, 41-28.
The Pirates are in third place going into the final three games of the regular season, holding an 8-3 league record behind Oakesdale at 10-3 and undefeated Gar-Pal at 13-0.
They'll finish with a road game at SJEL last Tuesday, Senior Night against Colton (3-10) on Friday and a road trip to Waitsburg Saturday to wrap up the season.
"We lost the game in the first quarter," lamented Head Coach Chris Wolf. "We missed open shot after open shot and let it affect our defense, getting behind 17 after one quarter.
"In the third quarter we defended hard and got lots of stops," he added, "but didn't gain any ground because we couldn't put the ball in the basket. We defended well enough to win but missed too many open shots."
Rory McKeirnan gave the Pirates a lift, Wolf said, in the fourth quarter, hitting three of three. Jett Slusser had 8 points and 11 rebounds.
